National Red Wine Day - August 28

History & Key Figures: Red wine has been a cherished beverage for thousands of years, with its origins tracing back to ancient civilizations. The earliest evidence of red wine production dates to 6,000 BC in what is now Georgia. Red wine played a significant role in the culture and rituals of ancient societies, including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.

The Greek physician Hippocrates, often referred to as the "Father of Medicine," praised red wine for its medicinal properties. During the 18th century, France's Bordeaux region became synonymous with high-quality red wine, thanks to figures like Marquis de Ségur, who was dubbed the "Prince of Vines" for his contributions to the industry.

Fun Facts:

  • Oldest Bottle: The world’s oldest unopened bottle of wine, dating back to 325 AD, is displayed in a German museum.

  • Health Benefits: Red wine is rich in antioxidants, particularly resveratrol, which is believed to support heart health.

  • Variety: There are over 10,000 varieties of red wine grapes globally, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir among the most popular.
